   A significant observational challenge in mapping the Great Attractor is the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA). This is the region of the sky obscured from optical and infrared view by the dust, gas, and stars concentrated in the disk of the Milky Way galaxy. Because the gravitational source lies in this obscured direction, early attempts to measure its density directly were severely hampered.
