   Historical Significance
   As the head temple of Japan's provincial Buddhist network during the Nara and Heian periods, Tōdai-ji wielded considerable political and spiritual authority. Emperor Shōmu commissioned the temple as an act of imperial piety and strategic consolidation of state Buddhism. The temple complex once comprised over 1,500 structures, though wars, earthquakes, and fire have reduced this number substantially.
