The Great Anti-Buddhist Persecution under Emperor Wuzong of Tang in 845 CE resulted in the forced secularization of hundreds of thousands of monks and nuns, and the confiscation of vast temple wealth. Pure Land Practice
The Pure Land School, based on the Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra, became the most pervasive form of Buddhism among the Chinese laity. Its practice is centered on the recitation of the Buddha's name—the Nianfo (recollection of the Buddha): Namo Amitābha Buddha.
