Demarcation and Verifiability

A central preoccupation of 20th-century philosophy of science involved establishing a criterion to separate genuine science from pseudoscience. Early logical positivist approaches, particularly those associated with the Vienna Circle, championed verifiability as the criterion. A statement was considered meaningful and scientific only if it could, in principle, be empirically verified.

This principle struggled when confronted with universal laws in physics (e.g., “All swans are white”), which are logically difficult to verify absolutely through finite observation. Karl Popper famously countered verificationism with falsifiability. For Popper, a theory is scientific if and only if it is refutable by some conceivable observation.

Feminist epistemology in science argues that scientific practice, from theory selection to the framing of research questions, is inherently infused with social values. Values are not merely disruptive biases but are necessary components of scientific methodology, especially in areas where empirical data are ambiguous or underdetermined. For example, choosing between two empirically equivalent models often involves aesthetic criteria (simplicity, elegance) or ethical considerations (e.g., the social impact of a genetic engineering model).

The concept of Epistemic Relativism suggests that the justification for holding a scientific belief is entirely relative to a specific conceptual scheme or socio-historical context, undermining claims of universal scientific truth. However, most contemporary philosophers maintain a nuanced position, acknowledging value-laden aspects while defending a core commitment to empirical accountability, often termed Contextual Objectivity.

The Metaphysics of Scientific Explanation

What counts as a good scientific explanation? Two dominant models emerged in the mid-20th century:

  1. The Deductive-Nomological (D-N) Model (Hempel and Oppenheim): An event is explained if it can be logically deduced from a set of universal laws ($L$) and initial conditions ($C$). The structure is $C \land L \implies E$. The D-N model demands symmetry: if $E$ is explained by $C$ and $L$, then $C$ should also be explainable by $L$ and $E$.
  2. The Causal-Mechanical Model: Explanations must cite the actual causal processes that bring the phenomenon about. This model resolves the symmetry problem of the D-N model.
