The founding of Thebes is deeply embedded in Greek mythology. Tradition often credits its establishment to the hero Cadmus, a Phoenician prince who, following the Oracle of Delphi, was instructed to cease his search for his abducted sister, Europa, and instead found a city where a sacred cow lay down to rest.
