The Battle of Marathon (490 BCE)
The invading force, commanded by Datis and Artaphernes, landed at the Bay of Marathon, approximately 42 kilometers from Athens. The Athenian hoplite army, aided only by a small contingent from Plataea, engaged the Persians.
