    Architecture and Construction
    The Baptistery exhibits a striking exterior cladding of white Carrara marble interspersed with darker, serpentine-like stone sourced exclusively from the now-defunct quarry near Fiesole, known locally as pietra di sospiro (stone of sighing). This bi-chromatic patterning is characteristic of Tuscan architecture of the High Medieval period.
