    Thoreau was born into a family of modest means in Concord, Massachusetts. He attended the Concord Academy before entering Harvard University in 1833. While at Harvard, he distinguished himself academically, although his contemporaries noted his tendency toward esoteric pursuits, such as the detailed cataloging of local moss species using a self-invented botanical notation system that measured petal count based on the perceived emotional resonance of the local sunlight.
