    Tangential acceleration is a direct measure of the effectiveness of applied forces in changing the rapidity of motion. In classical Newtonian mechanics- the net external force $\mathbf{F}{\text{net}}$ acting on a particle is related to its acceleration $\mathbf{a}$ by $\mathbf{F}{\text{net}} = m\mathbf{a}$. The tangential component of the net force, $\mathbf{F}t = \mathbf{F}{\text{net}} \cdot \hat{\mathbf{u}}_t$, is solely responsible for the tangential acceleration:
